The Strangest Marriage Equality Protest Yet

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

In a bizarre move, a couple in Australia have announced that they are prepared to protest if their federal parliament votes in favor of marriage equality later this year.

The bazar part is how they are protesting: by getting a divorce.

In an article for Canberra CityNews Nick Jensen revealed the odd protests saying that he and his wife, Sarah, believe marriage is sacred and that any move by the state to include "the solemnisation of same sex couples" would sully the sacredness of it such to a degree that they would no long care to be associated with the state's recognition of their marriage.

Our view is that marriage is a fundamental order of creation. Part of God's intimate story for human history. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman before a community in the sight of God. And the marriage of any couple is important to God regardless of whether that couple recognises God's involvement or authority in it…

When we signed that official-looking marriage certificate 10 years ago at Tuggeranong Baptist Church, we understood that the state was endorsing marriage, as currently defined, as the fundamental social institution – with all that this implied.

But if this is no longer the case, then we no longer wish to be associated with this new definition. Marriage is sacred and what is truly "marriage" will only ever be what it has always been.

As a minister myself, I'd like to point out the power this presumably pious couple have placed in the hands of the state and the outrageous audacity (if not sacrilege) they practice in assuming a very weak and powerless God.

For them, it would seem, an institute which they believe was not only created and blessed by God, but is "timeless and organic" can be utterly defiled by the state.

Well, that is a mighty powerful state and a sadly impotent God.

Ultimately, what the Jensen's are proving with their "protest" is that the real threat to the institute of marriage isn't marriage equality, it's ignorance and a willingness to use God as a tool to support their own biases and bigotry.
