Julian Assange And Wikileaks Are Being Blamed For Recklessly Releasing Highly Sensitive Personal Information Of Ordinary Citizens
Julian Assange is often hailed as a hero for his work with Wikileaks, but there is an underlying darkness to dumping information on the web. Too often, Assange is putting people in extreme danger.
According to the Nation, recent dumps of information have Assange under fire from "dissidents" and "nonconformists" in places like Turkey who have had their personal information leaked in the process of exposing the government.
Pink News UK reports that a Wikileaks dump includes sensitive information about Saudi citizens and migrant workers that can put them in extreme danger as well.
"Among the thousands of documents, the data includes personal information identifying at least one man with a gay sex conviction – as well as a number of rape victims and people living with HIV.
It also makes public the identity of domestic workers who had been tortured or sexually abused by their employers – even listing people's passport numbers, alongside their full names.
One of the cables includes private details of a Saudi man detained for 'sexual deviation' – the charge for homosexuality – raising fears of reprisals or 'vigilante' attacks."
One Saudi man who has been accused of homosexuality and as a result could face the death penalty came forward, telling the Associated Press about how dangerous Assange's actions were for him.
"Publishing personal stuff like that could destroy people. They published everything: my phone, address, name, details. If the family of my wife saw this…"
The Guardian reports that at least 500 names with personal information such as passports numbers are included in the "Saudi Cables" alone.
For Assange's part, he seems to have little remorse or concern and sees what he is doing as something in the greater good.
"The Saudi Cables lift the lid on an increasingly erratic and secretive dictatorship that has not only celebrated its 100th beheading this year, but which has also become a menace to its neighbors and itself."
But wait, this is where Julian Assange contradicts himself through a tweet in which he tries to claim innocence and blame the current furor on the fact it is an election year in the United States and he is being discredited.
No, WikiLeaks did not disclose "gays" to the Saudi govt. Data is from govt & not leaked by us. Story from 2015. Re-run now due to election.
