Trump & Family Should Be Terrified of the Newest Lawyer on Mueller’s Team

Robert Mueller Adds Lawyer Whose Past Experience Might Mean Bad Things For Donald Trump And Family

Republican President Donald Trump and his supporters continue to scream "fake news" every time someone mentions the fact he and his team are being investigated for possible collusion with Russia during the 2016 election. But if anyone needed to know whether this was just going away or not, one just needs to observe the actions of the special counsel led by Robert Mueller. And the background of the latest hire by the team should make Team Trump particularly nervous.

A lawyer formerly with the Justice Department, Greg Andres, has begun working with the team investigating whether anyone on the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during last year's presidential race. Andres is the 16th lawyer to join the team, so the addition is nothing new. But what he did during his time at the Justice Department might give another clue where this investigation is headed. Reuters reports:

…Andres, 50, served at the Justice Department from 2010 to 2012. He was deputy assistant attorney general in the criminal division, where he oversaw the fraud unit and managed the program that targeted illegal foreign bribery.

A lawyer with experience in "illegal foreign bribery" would certainly be a potential concern for those being investigated. It has already been reported Robert Mueller and his team are looking at possible financial crimes, including money laundering, and are looking heavily at key members of the Trump campaign, such as Paul Manafort and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Some of the avenues being investigated have also pointed to possible links to organized crime. This would be another specialty of Mueller's new hire. Andres was such a thorn in the side of one crime family, a plot to kill him was uncovered and aborted in 2005.

Reuters additionally notes this new hire means this story isn't ending soon.

That Mueller continues to expand his team means the probe is not going to end anytime soon, said Robert Ray, who succeeded Kenneth Starr as independent counsel for the Whitewater investigation during the Clinton administration.

"It's an indication that the investigation is going to extend well into 2018," said Ray. "Whether it extends beyond 2018 is an open question."

This could certainly complicate things for Republicans during the 2018 midterms. On top of dealing with what will likely be a deeply unpopular sitting president and the reality they tried taking health coverage away from millions of people, the cloud of Russian meddling in 2016 will still be hanging heavily in the air.

One could look at this as karma considering the numerous investigations Republicans carried out of Benghazi in order to hurt Hillary Clinton. (Investigations that magically stopped once the election was over. Go figure.) Now the GOP could be dealing with a major federal investigation while trying to defend their turf in the midterms. The only difference is, this investigation could very well prove actual crimes were committed by the campaign of Donald Trump, including by members of his family.

A tough 2018 just got a little worse for Republicans. And they have no one but Trump to thank for that.
